South Devon Day 1 - Plymouth to Wembury

Thanks to the rail strikes, I was forced to leave my car at the start of the walk in Plymouth rather than having it there at the end of the walk in ten days time - which initially made for a very tiring last day, but as it was, we wrapped up the two smaller last days into one leaving a full day to pick the car up which in the end worked out fairly well.

5 years earlier we took photos here in a torrential downpour as we finished the South Cornwall stretch of the SWCP. History wasn't about to repeat itself, but it was a bit drizzly as we prepared to resume the walk.

A quick change into our 'Smog' tops as we attempt another entry into the 'Smog Hall of Fame'. Really should invest in a new one mind as this one has been on plenty of trip now.

You may be surprised to know, that had I looked up from my GPS, I may have spotted a rather large sign!

The industrial areas of Plymouth made for easy walking, but certainly not what you would expect on the South West Coast Path.

The City of Plymouth certainly went 'above and beyond' to make sure you didn't get lost.

After nearly 2.5hrs of walking, we finally reached Mount Batten Point - Yet we could still see the start point just over the water, a bit deflating to say the least.

After the interesting Mount Batten Point, it was finally a relief to start the coastal walking proper. Here we are looking eastwards towards Jennycliff Bay

One last look back towards Plymouth (We thought !). As it was, Plymouth remained visible for quite some time.

Blackstone Rocks, as Wembury and the Bay comes into view. You can see Wembury Church as it prominently sits over the bay. We didn't do a left turn (as the majority of sensible walkers would do) and head up directly to Wembury, but we pressed on around the coast to the River Yealm to save some miles from Day 2. I would have probably stayed in Noss Mayo on Day 1, but there was no suitable accommodation suitable for one night stopovers, so it was an uphill walk to the town of Wembury and a night out in the only pub - The Odd Wheel.

As our first walking day nears it's end - the coastal path skirts around the mouth of the Yealm and gives brief views of the picturesque yachting village of Noss Mayo.
