One of the best walks in the Lake District in my opinion - The wonderful stroll down Great Langdale with the Langdale Pikes in the distance. The views only get better the further down the valley you go.

Lingmoor Fell & Side Pike can be seen on the other side of the valley as I start to make my way up alongside Stickle Ghyll.

I'll be skirting round Pavey Ark today and heading up to Thunacar Knott following the route of Bright Beck

Looking back towards Stickle Tarn as I start the gentle ascent.

Todays walk - which had been excellent up to this point, took a severe turn for the worse shortly after taking this photo. Whilst crossing a very shallow brook, I placed my right boot on a rock that was slightly underwater and had a greasy covering of moss or some other fine growth. My foot slipped about 3 inches (that's all) and I felt a severe painful blow to my lower back. "What the hell was that !" I staggered over to some rocks - took painkillers and smeared ibruprofen gel onto the affected area. I was in a lot of pain, I was about half way round as well (so I couldn't really just go back), so I decided to rest for a while and then carefully press on, on my intended route. It was most uncomfortable and I was more worried that I had done some real damage to my back as this had never happened before.

Later than planned - but a lunch stop at Thunacar Knott was necessary.

From Silver How summit - Looking back over Blea Rigg and the continuously up and down route taken to get from the Langdale Fells - Just what my back needed - not !! Anyway, after the descent and then a 2hr car journey - I managed to crawl into bed and siezed up ! No work for me for a week as I was immobile. Fortunately, although damage was done to my back that day, I have only ever had a few re-occurances of that level of discomfort - the damage was done that day though and it will always be wiith me !! So make sure you have good tread on yer boots.
