A 'Rekkie' of the area with a view to arranging a country pub crawl in a few weeks time.

I parked up in Markington, walked to Wormald Green - got a bus (36) to Ripon centre and then started my walk following the Ripon Rowel walk to Bishop Monkton, Burton Leonard, South Stainley and then Markington. Nice easy terrain - with the best bit being between Ripon and Bishop Monkton.

Starting from Ripon Cathedral

So serene - this was a very pleasant stage

Ripon Racecourse. It was once voted the 'Best Small Racecourse in the North'. It also appears to circumnavigate a lake

A clear way through - but in the next field I was greeted by a large number of very excited young bullocks - I had to scarper to my left and climb into an adjacent cornfield, I didn't run - just calmly walked away at pace, but they followed and even ran a little, they followed me whilst I was on the other side of the hedgerow - This has happened to me once before in Wales with Davy - It's quite Scary ! I'm sure they are just playful/inquisitive but they could do some damage I'm sure.

Church of St Leonard - Burton Leonard

This was the most disappointing part of this walk - A village with two pubs and none of them open ! The Hare & Hounds - was a really good pub, now shut and for sale, and the other, the Royal Oak was closed for the afternoon. A pint here would have been perfect - but it's a sign of the times for country pubs these days.
