Roadside parking at Dunmail Raise next to the AA box
Heading in the direction of Thirlmere parallel with the main road.
Crossing Raise Beck
Interesting little fella
You can get through okay
Looking over to Nab Crags part of the Wythburn Fells range
Almost above Wythburn Car Park and the start of Thirlmere
Sharp right turn for the start of the climb towards Nethermost Pike
This was a pretty good and well engineered path - it's the first time up this route and it was pretty good - plenty of lovely views to take your mind off the hard work.
Birk Side ahead
And again...
The path meanders its way up the fell sides
Oh no - Clag arriving ! Is this the end of my views for the day ?
The path up to the top of Helvellyn can just be seen through the clearing cloud.
No - It soon cleared and gave me some fine photo opportunities. There's St Sunday crag
Helvellyn shelter
Catstye Cam
Swirral Edge
Looking busy
Lovely view down to Red Tarn with Ullswater in the distance
Striding Edge
Heading back towards Nethermost Pike
Looking back again towards Striding Edge
Dollywagon Pike summit
Looking back to the route I took from Helvellyn - Nethermost Pike
Heading down towards Grisedale Tarn with Seat Sandal (my next target) behind.
Fairfield
Gentle stroll around Grisedale Tarn
A bit loose underfoot on the ascent up the 'path' of Seat sandal - easier going up
Looking back towards the path up to Fairfield with St Sunday Crag behind
Dollywagon Pike from Seat Sandal
Seat sandal summit
A nice grassy descent (not really !)
Now I made a bit of a mistake here - I should have kept to the path which veered off to the right - but I decided to be clever and do an off path route directly towards my car thinking that the terrain would all be the same - It wasn't.
I spent quite a while picking my way through the loose rocks and fern on this very steep descent. Do-able but no fun.
In future I'll keep to the path when I can't see the route clearly ahead.
