Summer Walk 2023 - Kirby, Great Broughton, Stokesley & Great Ayton.

After two failed 'Rekkies' - One in and around Northallerton and the other near Thirsk, I had to plump for a walk that we had done before due to time running out to arrange a new one. It certainly is getting harder to plan, with pubs shutting or not opening till evening, cost of transportation increasing significantly and more noticeable now, our limbs and joints are aging and the distances we used to all do without even thinking, are now becoming too much and walks need to be shortened.

So we headed into North Yorkshire and the village of Kirby-in-Cleveland, as is now often the case, The Black Swan doesn't open until 4pm on a Friday (contrary to their website and with no help from the landlady I may add). But not to worry, there is only a 10 minute stroll to Great Broughton where there are three pubs - One of which, The Jet Miners, is excellent for food. After spending the afternoon there, it was on to Stokesley with more good real ale pubs and then onto Great Ayton where we spent a couple of hours in the excellent 'Tannery' - If only there were more pubs like that in the countryside it would make my life so much easier.

Anyway, another great day out and although we got a shower or two, the weather was far better than the last time we did this walk - that wouldn't have taken much mind.

Leaving Kirby with views of the Cleveland Hills to our right.

After a few beers, it was into the countryside and a few miles of gentle terrain to Stokesley. Punctuated only by a visit to an Industrial Estate.

Fresh from his ordeal on the Pennine Way, our intrepid pace-setter assumes his normal position out at the front.

I know we have done this before, but it's such a good laugh - Here's our version of the Horse of the Year show.

The infamous gate - this caused me a lot of trouble last time we did this walk, as I missed it whilst chatting. I thought I might get away with it, but no chance - I was certainly made to suffer.

Mr Casino just couldn't resist the temptation - Not sure whether the feet left the ground or not though ?

Arriving in Stokesley and headed for The Green Man and The White Swan.

After a few beers and an hour of cricket, it was waterproofs on as we left the market town for Great Ayton.

Following the route of the River Leven (a tributary of the Tees), we head in the direction of Roseberry Topping (just in view) and our final destination of Great Ayton

All feeling good as we finish off the last stretch of the walk in good spirits.

Arriving at the village of Great Ayton and the excellent Tannery pub - Always superb real and craft ales to choose from.

Back in Stockton to end the night - Someone has made it onto the wide screen following his Pennine Way experience - accompanied by "I would walk 300 yards" on the sound system.
