Silver How

Friday 6th June 2014

A very significant day for us today - Having recovered from a serious injury at the age of ten, which so nearly took his life, my son battled back through the years to recover as best he could. Today was the day that I felt he was capable of resuming his fellwalking which had been so cruelly snatched away from him ten years earlier (soon after he had just climbed Scafell Pike). Silver How was a great place to re-start, it has everything, great location, great views and is a nice gentle challenge for the beginners.

Calum still has poor balance, but he coped with the undulations and loose ground underfoot very well. As a parent I was unsure whether I was being wise and that it was my desperation to get him to the top that was pushing him this way - But not the case at all, Calum coped admirably and we enjoyed a wonderful day together and achieved all our goals - even a celebratory beer at the end.

I felt that this closed one chapter and a new one was beginning, Calums recovery had taken a massive step and a pain inside me had been replaced with joy and pride.

Today was more than just a day in the Lake District for me.
