Wainwrights Pillar

Pillar - My last Wainwright second time around ! A really good walk today but the weather certainly had its say. We had a few mishaps and had to really work hard to navigate around at the area between Scoat Fell and Red Pike - I'd never go out on the fells without a map & compass - but a GPS is such a good help too.

Our route took us from Wasdale Head via Mosedale to Black Sail Pass where we turned left and climbed Pillar (a hand shake & a photo was all I got this time round at the top). After the limited celebrations, we went down to Wind Gap where we lost the path and had to re-trace our steps as the visibility was so bad. Scoat Fell was followed by Steeple before we did a circle (around the Scoat Fell area - I thought I'd got away with it but Paul took great pleasure in telling everyone later in the day !) before heading over finally to Red Pike (Wasdale).

This wasn't the glory day that I'd enjoyed back in October 2014 when I first completed my Wainwrights - this was much more subdued with only me & Paul to record the occasion. It didn't really matter though as I now start my third lap (aiming to finish in 2 years this time as it took me four years the first time and 3 years the second time).

Low cloud made navigation pretty difficult _ I made a couple of mistakes as we relied heavily on my GPS (walking round in a circle does count as a mistake !). The area around Scoat Fell and Red Pike can be tricky in poor visibility - as I found out to my embarrassment. Due to our stunning good looks, we managed to pick up a couple of girls lost in the mist - Well, maybe it wasn't our good looks - more like the fact we pretended to know where were going ! Anyway, we enjoyed our time with our new friends and we chatted all the way back to Wasdale. As part of the entertainment, I even demonstrated how easy it is to slip, fall & roll as we descended Red Pike. Good job I wasn't trying to impress !
