We always like snow on our Winter walks - If we could have hung on for a couple of weeks we would have got 'The Beast from the East' - which would have been interesting to say the least - In the end we had to make do with our very own 'Beast' in Phil. Also, having cancelled a summer walk due to bad weather a few years earlier (heavy rain & flooding in Swaledale) I would have been reluctant to cancel another in the same area due to the significant amount of abuse and ribbing I tend to receive. As it was, the conditions were pretty good.
The walk along the beautiful River Swale to Reeth is generally part of the Coast to Coast path and is familiar to some of us - We stopped off at the following pubs along the way: Kings Head (Gunnerside), Punchbowl (Low Row), Bridge (Grinton) and then Black Bull/Kings Arms/Buck (Reeth) - finished off later in The Smog (Stockton) following our minibus journey back.
This is a great dale walk which is always enjoyed - the pub stops are optional !
