Grassington to Burnsall alongside the River Wharfe

A lovely refreshing riverside walk through stunning Upper Wharfedale in the south-east corner of the Yorkshire Dales, starting from Grassington and stopping off for a cold beer in the pretty village of Burnsall. The return route headed back to the Hebden suspension Bridge and into Hebden itself, before heading back to Grassington via traditional dales countryside and occasional woodland.

Parking

Bit overcast - but very little rain forecasted so we should be okay - Setting off from Grassington for a gentle country walk on my 60th birthday.

A really nice place Grassington - Loved it here doing the Dales Way a year ago and the river walks are just superb in this area.

A right turn as we head out of the town (or is it a village ?) towards Linton Falls.

Our first of many stretches, walking alongside the River Wharfe.

The path is easy going - but there was a complaint or two as I had picked a day when there was the occasional spot of light - fine - drizzle ! Now was it my fault that my 60th Birthday fell on Monday September 13th 2021 ?

Phew - downpour over, back to enjoying the walk. Hebden Suspension Bridge up ahead

Loup Scar again - I would imagine this place and all it's limestone rock formations are of great interest to geologists - plenty of wildlife to look out for too.

Burnsall Bridge - and what's here on the right hand side ? Well, it is my birthday - lets stop for a couple to start the celebrations.

Fortunately it was dry and there were nice outdoor heaters - so the complaints were minimal.

A brief wander around and it was time to head back - this time a slightly higher route via Hebden.

We re-traced our steps and crossed the Hebden suspension bridge again, before heading away from the river towards Hebden.

Half a mile of country lane walking before the village was reached.

As it was Monday - and the village pub was shut, We visited the Old Schoolhouse instead and enjoyed a nice coffee and cake break.

Then it was back into the familiar Dales countryside as we headed back towards Grassington.

I remember these old cotton mill slabs from the Pennine Way - fortunately there were only very short sections to cover on the way back.

Burnsall & Thorpe fell in the distance.

Now having been reasonably close to my 7.5mile estimate for todays walk - I blew it by going a long way round the outskirts of Grassington, expecting the town centre to emerge at any point. Think I missed a left turn as we reached town and managed to add an extra 0.5mile onto the day. Fine by me - but gave Mrs R plenty of ammunition along the lines that "its always much further than I tell her" Never mind - A nice meal and night out await in Harrogate.
