Day 9 - Danby Wiske to Osmotherley/Lord Stones

The second of our easy days across the Vale of Mowbray was done mostly on flat country lanes. Today was the hottest day that I've ever walked - We were grateful that landowners left cool boxes with bottles of drink available for us walkers to take if we needed to - One place even had a fridge on the side of the path. Usually an honesty box was alongside.

Today's route crosses the main North East Coast railway line and also the very busy A19, we decided to continue on the C2C path to Carlton in Cleveland to reduce the more challenging next day a little - this worked well as we had plenty of time and energy, although we did get lost a bit in the forestry paths inside Arncliffe Woods. We have walked right across the country and manage to get lost 10 miles from our homes !

A good night was had in Osmotherley and our B&B (Breamar) was given the 'second best' on our B&B rating for this trip.

I think it is from a fairground hall of mirrors - I'm not as wide as that !!

The dash across the A19. One day someone will be killed crossing here, then they will go and build a footbridge. How many thousands every year must 'go for it' to get to the other side and continue the walk (there's no alternative). Timing our run, we set off but Dav's hat blew off so I had to grab it on the way. I chatted to a C2C guide back in Stonethwaite who said that he could be here with a group for an hour sometimes trying to get them all across safely.

As it was a short, flat easy day - we decided to trim a bit off the next day by continuing onto Carlton in Cleveland (and then getting a lift back to Osmotherley). It was a good idea as the next day is a testing one from Osmotherley to Blakey - the last time I did the C2C I was absolutely knackered by the time I got to the Lion Inn - although the weather was atrocious that time round)

Today was absolutely sweltering - the hottest day I've ever walked in. Ah, there's emergency rescue !

Mum & Dad - It's always great to see them and they're always pleased to join in and help out. They don't live too far from here, so they picked us up and took us back to Osmotherley

Got to replenish the fluids on a day like today ! We sat enjoying beers till about 9'ish when we saw some friends arriving with their back packs - Four Canadian girls who had done the whole stretch from Richmond to Osmotherley in today's heat - they were exhausted. One had heatstroke and couldn't join us, the others managed a couple of drinks but were pretty wiped out - that was just bad luck really as although it's a long stretch, it's very flat but it was just the intense heat today that got them.
