After a couple of weeks looking after Grandchildren it was time for us to enjoy some time for ourselves, so we booked a couple of nights in the Lakes and then another couple in Skipton. After an eventful journey to the lakes, which included me driving a young girls fully laden small car up and over Honister Pass - and then walking back to my car afterwards (the 17 year old had just passed her test and got 'spooked' an the first steep stretch from Seatoller, when she ground to a halt, and the car didn't have enough power to get going again). Her three young passengers had to follow on foot.

Then onto a relaxing and gentle stroll around Buttermere amongst the backdrop of the High Stile ridge. We have done this walk many times before, its always a nice easy one to enjoy whilst chatting and appreciating the full beauty of the lakes in this most idyllic of locations. It can be started and finished from Buttermere village or at the small car park at Gatesgarth Farm.

We always like to finish where there is a pub, and there are two in Buttermere, so that's usually the draw.

Parking

We finally reached Buttermere and parked up in one of the two main car parks.

A short wander down to the water with the beautiful mountains all around.

It was quite chilly at the waters edge - but some folk decided to take a dip - mad !!

As Christine stuck to the flat path around the lake, we passed the uphill path for the ascent of Red Pike and the High Stile ridge.

Looking over to the other side of the lake towards High Snockrigg - somewhere I'd been on the way to Robinson just a few weeks earlier.

A much easier path today. There was a chilly breeze, but the tree lined path kept us well sheltered.

Fleetwith Pike comes into view as we near the eastern end of Buttermere.

As we head back towards the village, High Stile, High Crag and Red Pike can all be viewed along the way

A slightly different standard of path on the road side of this walk, with a bit of country lane walking and then a meandering footpath along the tree lined shore.

I may have to duck !

After safely negotiating this, it was off to the Langstrath Inn to have tea.
