Troutbeck Tongue

Troutbeck Tongue is set in the middle of the Troutbeck Valley surrounded on three sides by very much bigger fells. It's a gentle day out with very little strenuous ascent, although scenic and picturesque throughout. We chose to walk it from the Church Bridge just outside of Troutbeck (that's my favourite parking place for many walks in this area). The walk can be shortened slightly by heading straight through Limefitt Park from Troutbeck, but I always prefer to start by heading along the Garburn Pass track for a short while.

Parking

Parked up as usual at Church Bridge Troutbeck.

Across the Bridge, cross the road and its onto the Garburn Pass track.

Beautiful Hydrangea gardens as the bath climbs slightly and slowly turns left above Limefitt Park.

First sighting of today's little fell - Troutbeck Tongue, nestled in amongst the bigger fells with one side of the Kentmere Horseshoe to the right

Our path today heads downwards (left) into the Troutbeck Valley. If we were heading for Sour Hows and Sallows, we would have stayed on the Garburn Pass track for a bit longer.

Heading into the valley with the sun beating down, our central target begins to become more prominent. Also, Wansfell (Baystones) can be seen nearest on the left with Stoney Cove Pike furthest away and the Kentmere Horseshoe fells of Thornthwaite Crag, Froswick, Ill Bell and Yoke are on our right.

A slight descent down to the wooden bridge over Hagg Gill.

The bridleway continues through Troutbeck Park alongside Hagg Gill before a left ascent is taken close to the northern end of Troutbeck Tongue.

A short and easy climb to the summit of Troutbeck Tongue.

Time for a quick selfie at the summit before a swarm of midgies descended upon us and we had to move on.

Having had a trouble free day so far, we did encounter a slightly wet and boggy section at the base of the fell which needed a bit of attention to avoid slipping.
