Place Fell

Parking is very plentiful at the St Peters Martindale Church at the top of the hause between Howtown and Martindale.

Taking the path towards Sandwick.

Always a cracking view down into Martindale with Wether Hill & High Raise as the backdrop awith The Nab and Beda Fell on the right.

Skirting around the base of Hallin Fell on the picturesque footpath and heading towards Sleet Fell which can be seen behind the farmhouse.

Lowther Barn on the Ullswater path - I could be wrong but the last couple of times I've walked past, it's been closed (and it is August Bank Holiday week), so I am assuming that it's no longer in use as a tea room.

An easy gentle stroll alongside the water for a few miles.

Gowbarrow Fell can be seen on the other side of Ullswater.

I had actually considered going there instead of this walk this morning

As I turn left to join the Coast to Coast path and start the climbing.

I bet many a happy soul has taken a breather here before completing the rest of the climb.

Taking the path to the left and the ascent towards Place Fell can now be clearly seen.

I stopped for a minute or two to look back down the path and over to Angletarn Pikes on the other side of Boredale Hause.

Clouds are beginning to gather and a spot or two of drizzle can be felt - I have a fighting chance of getting back to the car before getting soaked, as I start my descent towards Sandwick.

This often seems a long hard ascent going this way, yet it was a doddle going from the other side - weird!

Shapely little Hallin Fell, one of the smallest 'Wainwrights' of them all.

I veered to the left following a small path and generally headed towards Sandwick, although the path did sweep round to the right as I neared the bottom. The road could then be joined.

I stuck to the country lane rather than across the side of Hallin on the way back - no particular reason, just mixing it up a little.

Safely back at the car having beating the rain, I headed for home with the bonus of Saturday afternoon football to listen to on the radio.

A good day all round.
