Holme Fell, Lingmoor & Black Fell

Saturday 24th January 2015

Tarn Hows, Yew Tree Tarn, Holme Fell, Little Langdale, Lingmoor & Black Fell.

I parked up at Tarn Hows at 10am - walked down to Glen Mary Bridge and Yew Tree Tarn then up Uskdale Gap to Holme Fell and back down the other side. I then decided to go on to Lingmoor via Little Langdale and then back to my car via Black Fell. Weather was lovely & views wonderful especially from the top of Lingmoor.

However my day wasn't quite over - Having reached the summit of Black Fell, all I had to do was stroll down to the NT car park at Tarn Hows and I would be on my way back home to the North East for tea - but I made a right howler, somehow not concentrating (trying to get a radio to work to get football latest scores actually !) and following a path down the left hand side of the fell (East) rather than bearing right - I realised my error and decided to cut across the fell to pick up the right path - Big mistake ! - I ended up in a tree plantation/swamp (Iron Keld) - which was becoming impassable - I decided to retreat as the light was fading and re-trace my steps all the way back to the top. Starting my descent again it still didn't go brilliantly, I still ended up having to climb over a barbed wire fence just to get onto a decent track.
Thinking I was done for the day (seeing a signpost for Tarn Hows), I switched off again and concentrated on the radio reception from my phone whilst strolling along (still never got it to work !) only to come to the conclusion the sign must have been for cyclists or cars ! I went a long way round in the dark on a road which was no fun only then to have to walk back up to the NT car park.
I've climbed Black Fell before and never had any problems - I really made a mess of it this time ! even with a GPS in my pocket. (At least my team won - although it was long finished by the time I found out !)

Not my best navigation day - but a cracking walk
