Cleveland Way Day 7 - Robin Hoods Bay to Scarborough

Good Friday and already the popular Robin Hoods Bay was beginning to feel busy - I parked at the large Station Car Park which is right on the Coast to Coast and Cleveland Way path.

Tides out today - but the last two times we were here (C2C), the tide was in and was right up to the slipway, which made it easy to throw your stones into the sea as the C2C custom demands.

We spotted an ice cream van on the beach in the distance and tried to work out how on earth it got there ?

Special memories of sitting outside this pub in the sunshine enjoying some beers at the end of the fabulous Coast to Coast walk.

Time to press on as we start the ascent which we knew was coming.

After the steep climb away from the waterfront, we stop for a breather and look back towards the quaint little fishing village of Robin Hoods Bay.

By a strange co-incidence, I'd just been reading The Strider magazine yesterday and this landslip was actually mentioned. So I was sort of expecting a detour. I'm sure, that during a dry summer, the diversion would be pleasant enough, but today it was just a muddy trudge through the all too familiar 'wetlands' of North Yorkshire.

Where the diversion re-joined the main path you could see the most likely culprit for this detour. It was now that we realised that we could have taken the much more enjoyable and quicker route along the beach ! Not always possible I guess, but today would have been a breeze. Oh well, you live and learn.

Here we go again - I hope today isn't going to be a repeat of Day 6.

As it was, there wasn't too much soft stuff on todays walk.

Then it was onto Ravenscar - a strange sort of place with an old railway station, a few grand houses and a large country house hotel spread about , I remember walking the Cinder Path from Scarborough to Whitby and stopping off for a coffee and cake in the nice tearooms here

Lovely views along the coastline as we head towards Hayburn Wyke.

We stopped for a late lunch at Hayburn Wyke, which is where I realised that I hadn't hadn't packed my sandwich into my bag as I set off this morning ! The first time, ever that I've made that mistake.

Resigned to a chocolate bar lunch only - Davy came to the rescue and shared his sandwich pack - what a generous soul he is.

Another short but steep ascent as we depart Hayburn Wyke.

The sun is coming out too, which makes for a pleasant last section of the walk.

Scarborough comes into view in the distance.

Round one more point and we should be there.

Finally, we head down to the Northern end of Scarborough (Scalby Mills). I decided to balance out the last two days of this walk so that both were pretty similar in length. Plus parking is easy at Scalby Mills (Sea Life Centre etc.) and it avoided the need to go into the centre of Scarborough and fight for a car parking space on Easter weekend.

One more day to do and then it's another completed LDW. We will be completing the South West Coast Path in the summer and having completed the Pennine Way last summer, we will have then closed out three National Trails in one twelve month period. We're on a roll.
