C2C Day 2 - Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite

The second day of the Coast to Coast is one of my favourites - You get to walk along the South side of Ennerdale passing Anglers Crag and Robin Hoods Chair and then up to the Black Sail hut with the High Stile Ridge on your left and Pillar etc. on your right - Not to mention Great Gable up ahead at the top of the valley. A cup of tea and a sit down is a must at the Black sail Hut with a chance to chat to other coasters who are always eager to swap walking stories and plans for the days ahead.

I love it here and it's just the best place to be - things are going great and the fells are soon to be challenged.

A good 'calf stretcher' is Loft Beck as the ascent is made to the saddle between Haystacks and Grey Knotts - It can be a struggle for some, as it's a reasonable climb, but once the height is gained it's easy walking over to and down to Honister Slate mine, at times via an old mining tramway.

After Honister, the gentle descent down to Rosthwaite is made and a few beers in the Walkers Bar at the Scafell Hotel on the evening were enjoyed.

Parking

A casual walk through the woods from Ennerdale Bridge to Ennerdale to start the day

Still & Beautiful - Ennerdale, the most Westerly of all the lakes and also the most unspoilt

It's a joy to walk the single path along the Southern side of Ennerdale - passing Anglers Crag and Robin Hoods Chair along the way

Then as the lake as passed, it's over to the Northern side of the River Liza and the Black Sail track - A long and flat, but strangely very enjoyable track all the way to a very special place - the outpost which is the Black Sail Hut

Time to view Pillar along the way and also to say "Hi" to other coasters as you pass

Time to make a cuppa and take those boots off ! - The Black Sail Hut, the best place to get chatting to similar minded folk - mostly all doing the C2C.

Think it's great that there's the means to make a lovely mug of tea - with an honesty box of course - long may it last

Time to leave this oasis of fun and head up towards the Drumlins and Loft Beck

Great Gable at the head of the Valley - Not for us today, a left turn and a climb out of Ennerdale is next

One last look back at Pillar

The first chance to stretch those calves as we tackle the climb up alongside Loft beck

On the 'flattish' saddle between Haystacks and Brandreth - There are cracking views of Buttermere and Crummock Water

My favourite part of the world - I love it here and know it very well - but in the days to come there will be a lot of unchartered territory

The scars of the slate mining operations are all around at Honister Pass

Heading down to another place for a cuppa !

Old habits die hard ! But I can't find a number anywhere ! Diesels are much better - don't you agree ?

Heading into Borrowdale

Is this via ferrata ?

Time for a rest at the B&B before 'hitting the town' - Not all beds are suitable for me - May not get the best nights sleep at this place !
