Ripon to Burton Leonard

Saturday 18th July 2020

Ripon to Burton Leonard via Bishop Monkton.

A lovely gentle walk alongside the Ripon Canal and River Ure to Bishop Monkton and then through the farmland countryside to Burton Leonard.

We started off with a quick drink at The Water Rat before setting off by the canal. A very picturesque route which is also a section of the Ripon Rowel and the walking cannot get any easier than this as we stroll past the many locks and bridges of the canal and also past the outskirts of Ripon racecourse. Soon afterwards, the River Ure is reached as we head southwards. The weather was generally warm and humid - but rain was always a possibility and did eventually arrive just before our lunch stop at Bishop Monkton (The Masons Arms). After a lovely lunch, the light rain disappeared and the last short section to Burton Leonard was quickly negotiated in dry conditions which were thankfully 'beer garden' suitable for our last stop of the day - The Royal Oak.

A great day out all round
