Offa's Dyke Day 9 - Hay-on-Wye to Llangattock Lingoed

We had expected this day to be a real brute - but it wasn't that bad at all. We had arranged to meet Dicko & Sian at the Hunters Moon pub and were concerned that the length of the walk would mean we would arrive late and tired. But we blitzed it, especially along the excellent footpath along the top of the Hatterrall Ridge - a fast pace and excellent walking conditions meant we arrived in very good time indeed - I think our legs were in tip-top condition by then, as we really enjoyed the fast pace and the 19 miles seemed to be done in no time.

It is fair to also say though, that once the hard work in initial climb up Hay Bluff is done, the views from the Hatterrall Ridge are really rewarding. And at the end of the leg, arriving in the lovely village of Llangattock Lingoed in hot sunshine and enjoying a cold beer in the garden with our boots off was very satisfying. We enjoyed a great night with Dicko & Sian in the Hunters Moon - this walk was becoming a classic !

We saw plenty of cows and zillions of sheep, cows would sometimes walk alongside us in convoy which was often a bit off putting, but okay - This herd of bullocks (I think) seemed very inquisitive as we passed by and headed for us, forming what looked like to be preparations for a a cavalry charge - We probably made the fatal mistake of walking very fast then legging it for the nearest kissing gate. It sounded like they charged but we didn't look. Once we made it to the other side they just stood and stared. Fancy being chased by a cow ! better not tell anyone that (Wimp !!)

Certainly a sight for sore eyes. Sian is now affectionately known as the 'bag lady' - She joins us at the last 2 or 3 days of a long distance walk and does the baggage transfer for us - what a girl, saving us a few quid - plus she gets us pressies for completing each walk - A real gem !!
